As the dandelions come into full bloom at the Honeybee Sanctuary, we give a sigh of relief and a prayer of thanks. For the beekeeper, dandelions mark the end of scarcity—the page turning from worry, shortage, and diminishing colonies, towards new growth, health, and the guarantee that our bees have survived yet another Winter. Such is the value of this source of nectar and pollen for the bees. To see the fields spotted with those beautiful yellow flowers brings true joy to our hearts!
We invite you to come celebrate the new season with us at the Sanctuary! Join us for a tour, visit our gift shop, enjoy free dandelion-themed snacks and refreshments, and learn more about what we all can do to help support the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Our director, Alex Tuchman, will be giving a special talk at 2:00 pm.
Experience the magic of swarming and working with natural honeybee queens!
Practical learning and demonstrations of biodynamic beekeeping practices, in-depth study of honeybee anatomy and physiology, meditative work, exploration of the spiritual foundations of biodynamic beekeeping, hands-on experience with the bees, and festivals around honey, dandelions, and biodynamic preparations will all be part of these richly transformative learning opportunities.
(This class can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of our comprehensive four-module Spikenard Biodynamic Beekeeping Training)
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4TH, 7 – 8:30 PM, AND SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5TH, 9 AM – 5 PM.
Presenter: Alex Tuchman
Event Location: Threefold Community Farm, Chestnut Ridge, NY
Join us Friday evening for an introductory lecture on the overarching approach of biodynamic beekeeping, a meditative path of inquiry into the life of the honeybee. This talk is open to the public for a small fee, but included for those attending Saturday’s full-day workshop.
Saturday will include some classroom time: immersing in the life of the bee through the wheel of the year, preparing for overwintering, learning about necessary equipment and site preparation for the spring, and learning how to best support the honeybee in her natural rhythms. We’ll also visit the hives in the Pfeiffer Garden for an up close and personal experience with the bees.
Our workshop is for folks looking to deepen their understanding of the honeybee, and is open to current beekeepers and those still dreaming.
